Try SCUBA diving – Registration is OPEN

This one-evening course provides participants with a basic orientation to scuba diving from the safety of the pool. Participants are paired with an experienced instructor who will take you on a first dive tailored to your comfort level.

Try SCUBA will be offered on the following dates:

Fees:
$40+HST for UofT students and Hart House Athletic members.

Rescue SCUBA diver

Once you are a certified scuba diver, you can expand your diving knowledge with a NAUI Rescue Scuba Diver course. Learn how to manage risks and effectively handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies, how to assist and transport divers, and how to perform surface rescues and rescues from depth involving both boat and shore based skin and scuba divers. Included is the CPR Health Care Provider with First Aid + Oxygen Administration course. This is a compulsory requirement of this course.

Your Rescue Scuba Diver certification is a critical step in your pathway to becoming a NAUI Leader should you plan to pursue additional certifications like Skin Diving Instructor, Assistant Instructor, Divemaster, or Instructor in the future.

All participants must be in good health and be previously certified as a NAUI Scuba Diver or equivalent. This course is open to both HHUC members and the general public. The minimum age required to attend this course is 18.

Participants must be members in good standing of the Ontario Underwater Council (OUC). OUC memberships cost an additional $40.00 and may be obtained at the start of the course if needed.

Members: $249+HST
General Public: $359+HST

CPR Health Care Provider with First Aid & O2

Powered by DAN, this course will teach you team care CPR and first-aid skills including one and two-person CPR for adults. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms associated with cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and respiratory arrest and proper methods of shock and wound management. This course includes a module for O2 administration for SCUBA divers.  You may take this one-day course on its own, or as a compulsory component of the Rescue SCUBA Diver Course. This course is open to both HHUC members and the general public. The minimum age required to attend this course is 18.

Fees:
Members:  $90+HST
General public: $150+HST

Underwater Hockey Saturdays

HHUC is teaming up with the Toronto UWH (Underwater Hockey) club to bring underwater hockey program to Hart House!

On May 5th a pilot UWH course will be launched and you are invited to participate.

The course will consist of 5 sessions from 7:45 – 9:00pm on the following dates:

May 5th, 2018

May 26th, 2018

June 2nd, 2018

June 16th, 2018

June 23rd, 2018

Complete beginners, intermediate and advanced players are encouraged to participate.

Each session will be broken into two halves.

In the first half of a session, 1 dedicated instructor and 1-2 guest instructors will be introducing beginners and intermediate players to new skills, improving underwater fitness and team building exercises. Advanced players are free to use the first ½ session for personal fitness training, drills and/or a deep end game.

In the second half of a session all players will participate in UWH game(s) that will be designed to be engaging for players of all skill levels.

The pilot is FREE for HHUC members and costs $50 for non-club members (public) with a registration deadline of May 26th.

Nitrox Diver & Refresher course – April 2018

Breathing Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) has a number of benefits, which include extending your in-water dive time, and reducing your risk of decompression illness. Bottom-line: you will have more time to dance around the coral reefs and swim with the colorful fish! Whether you seek a full Nitrox certification, or wish to refresh your Nitrox diving skills, this HHUC offering is for you!

Certification option:  For divers holding a SCUBA diver or currently enrolled in an HHUC learn to SCUBA course.  This course includes a mandatory e-learning and a 1-evening practical workshop.  The open-water dives will be offered based on availability.  Fees: $142 for HHUC members, $171 for the general public.

Refresher option: For divers who already hold a Nitrox SCUBA certification and desire a refresher practical session on EANx diving.  Participants will attend the 1-evening practical workshop with the full certification students. Fees: $30 for HHUC members, $40 for the general public.

Dates:

  • e-learning begins on April 10th or upon full payment for the course, and must be completed before the workshop.
  • workshop: April 17th, from 6:30PM – 10:30PM.

Scuba Skills Workshops and Fitness Tuesdays

Dates: On February 6, 27, and March 13

Time: 9-11 p.m.

Location: Athletic Centre Pool (55 Harbord St., Toronto)

Two concurrent sessions will be run on these evenings:

1) Scuba Skills Workshops: Instructor-led Scuba Skills Workshop for certified divers

2)  Fitness Tuesdays: Training for fitness, skin diving and apnea as well as playing underwater hockey. You do not need to be a certified diver to take part (new students are welcome).

Bring your fins, mask and snorkel… and a bathing suit and towel. We will be exercising and get warm, so neoprene is not really necessary unless you get cold really easily.

Refresher SCUBA – Feb 13th, 2018

Get back into the pool and refresher your SCUBA diving skills!  This is an instructor-led evening course for certified divers who have been inactive for few years or need a little bit of practice before a dive trip.

  • $20 + HST for HHUC members, UofT students, and Hart House Athletic members.
  • $60 + HST for the general public.

All participants must have a Blue membership with the Ontario Underwater Council.  A $40 membership is available for purchase in the classroom and is valid until December 31, 2018.

Topics covered in the classroom: equipment familiarization & proper use, dive table review, dive planning review, physiology essentials related to skills and hazards.  In pool: weights, equipment assembly & care, SCUBA essentials – mask clear, reg recovery, buoyancy, communication, and underwater swimming.
